Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was born on October 15, 1931, in the small coastal town of Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu, India. His father, Jainulabdeen, was a boat owner and imam of the local mosque, and his mother, Ashiamma, was a homemaker. Though they were not wealthy, Kalam’s family lived a simple, content life, rooted in strong values of faith, hard work, and education.

From an early age, Kalam was known for his inquisitive mind and determination to learn. Despite their modest means, his parents ensured that he received a good education. He attended Schwartz High School in Ramanathapuram, where he showed great interest in mathematics and science.

Kalam helped his family financially by distributing newspapers in the morning to support his education. His early fascination with flight and aerodynamics led him to dream of becoming an aeronautical engineer. After finishing school, he pursued a degree in physics at St. Joseph’s College in Tiruchirappalli and later studied aerospace engineering at the Madras Institute of Technology (MIT).

At MIT, Kalam’s interest in engineering deepened. He worked on various projects, and it was here that he developed a strong foundation in aerospace technology, which would later shape his future contributions to India's space and missile programs.

4. Aeronautical Engineering Kalam’s desire to work with aircraft led him to pursue a degree in Aeronautical Engineering at the prestigious Madras Institute of Technology (MIT) in Chennai. He graduated from MIT in 1957, specializing in aerospace engineering. At MIT, Kalam worked on projects related to aircraft design, and this experience laid the foundation for his later work in India’s space and missile programs. His education at MIT instilled in him a strong sense of discipline and technical expertise.
